Next to raw materials, energy represents the largest single cost element of most manufacturing processes. Hertel recognise thermal insulation as a valuable investment and a tremendous asset to energy conservation and process efficiency.

Properly maintained insulation contributes significantly to a plant’s operating bottom line, in turn helping to reduce CO2 emissions, carbon footprint and operating costs.

Thermal Insulation Materials

Thermal insulation is defined as every measure taken against the transferring of energy from and to the interior of a building. In order to achieve thermal insulation in a building one must select special products and adopt the appropriate methods and procedures. Thermal insulation materials are used to decrease the U value, which is a measure of heat loss. The lower the U value, the better the insulation that the material provides.

Why it is important to thermally insulate our buildings:

  • Healthier and more pleasant living
  • Energy consumption is minimized
  • Investment cost of heating and air-conditioning systems of an insulated house is much lower
  • Most thermal insulation systems are also sound insulating, therefore minimizing noise
  • The environment is protected by minimizing energy consumption and gas emissions.

What are the requirements of the Thermal Insulation Regulation?
The requirements for minimum energy efficiency in buildings are in effect since 1/1/2010 :
1. In order for a new building to acquire a Certificate of Energy Performance, its energy efficiency should be classified as category B or better.
2. The average coefficient of thermal transmittance Um of the exterior of the building (with the exception of the flooring and roof that are considered as part of the exterior) should not exceed the following values:
a) For buildings used as residences (Um ≤1,3W/m2K)

b) For buildings not used as residences (Um ≤1,8W/m2K)

Thermal Insulation Systems for Window and Door Frames

The use of fossil fuels to produce energy creates greenhouse gases. These gases trap energy in the atmosphere making the Earth grow warmer. As a result, the built up of greenhouse gases create a negative impact on the climate pattern, altering them drastically and threatening human health and ecosystems. A well insulated building can save energy up to 50%.

The parts of a building that need to be thermally insulated are:

  • External walls
  • Windows, doors and roofs
  • External flooring
  • Structural elements  which are adjacent  to non-airconditioned areas

5.1 Aluminium systems and thermal insulation

Energy loss from window and door openings can reach 25%. This is an important piece of information that needs to be addressed when thermal insulation of a building is under consideration. The thermal insulation aluminium frames have specially designed components and EPDM gaskets that are mounted between the internal and external parts of an aluminium profile, in order to seal the sash of the frame when in rest position. In Cyprus according to the ‘Energy Performance of Buildings Directive’ published by the Energy Service of the Ministry of Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism, the thermal transmittance coefficient Uw for every frame must be less than or equal to 3,8 W/m2K.

5.2 The benefits of thermal insulation systems

• Reduced heat loss from the interior of the building during winter months and reduced heat transfer from external high temperatures during hot weather.
• Improved thermal transmittance values by 40-70%

This results to:

–  Up to 30% savings in energy and money.

–  Reduction of the emissions of greenhouse gases.

– Decreased needs for heating and air conditioning and hence lower investment costs for heating/air conditioning equipment.

– Decreased or even elimination of humidity condensation on the surface of the frame, thus minimizing the possibility  of mould formation.
